The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work attributed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Modern scholars estimate the oldest sections date back to 300 BCE (mainly in the Book of Watchers), while the latest part (Book of Parables) was likely written in the late 1st century BCE.

"The Scriptures will be given to them, they will believe and rejoice in them; all the righteous will rejoice in learning from them all the ways of justice" (1 Enoch 104:13).

The first sections of the book were composed in the 3rd century BCE. The authors were partly dependent on the Pentateuch and had expanded sections of Genesis, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. For example, 1 Enoch 1:9 (quoted in the Epistle of Jude 1:14-15) is originally a Midrash from Deuteronomy 33:2.

The Book of Enoch (abbreviated 1 Enoch) is an intertestamental book that is part of the Coptic Church's Bible but is not accepted as canonical by other Christian churches. The complete versions of this book that have been preserved are in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Church, but various parts are known in Greek, Syriac, Armenian, Arabic, and Latin, with a fragment in Coptic. Additionally, several fragments have been found in Aramaic and one in Hebrew (4Q317), at Qumran. The tradition attributed its authorship to Enoch (also transcribed as Henoch or Enoch).

The book was edited in the 1st century CE and consists of several parts written in the 3rd century BCE and 1st century CE.

Early Christians held the Book of Enoch in high regard, as evidenced by the canonical Epistles of Jude (6 and 14-16) and 2 Peter (2:4), as well as the non-canonical writings of Barnabas and those by Justin Martyr (100-165), Athenagoras (170); Tatian (110-172); Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyon (115-185); Clement of Alexandria (150-220); Tertullian (160-230); Lactantius (260-325), and also Methodius of Philippi, Minucius Felix, Commodianus, and Priscillian (died 385).

The Book of Enoch is an apocalyptic book belonging to Jewish apocalyptic literature.

Undoubtedly, the Book of Enoch was widely known and appreciated among the Jewish community and later inherited by early Christians who were largely responsible for preserving it in other languages. The Book of Enoch is classified as pseudepigraphal because its content is attributed to this legendary descendant of Adam, although its content and issues narrated are clearly of later origin.
